The $196 million, 24,000-member Cabrillo Credit Union in San Diego said more than 1,700 members have signed up to use its new mobile app in the first month it was offered.

That activity included processing more than a thousand check deposits via the Android and iPhone apps, Cabrillo CU. Other functionality includes bill pay, monthly statements and transfers to other financial institutions.

“We want to give our members the ability to do everything on their mobile devices and this is the first big step in that direction,” said Robin Lentz, Cabrillo CU's president/CEO.

The mobile technology comes from mShift of Fremont, Calif., the credit union said. Cabrillo CU also was one of the first credit unions to deploy the new KeyStone core processing platform from local startup Corelation Inc.

Cabrillo CU was founded in 1955 and primarily serves U.S. Border Patrol and other federal employees in the San Diego area, as well as Sharp HealthCare and Carlsbad city employees. Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in San Diego County.
