The voices of experience were heard at a recent gathering of the Credit Union League of Connecticut's young professionals program. The relative newcomers to the industry met at a restaurant in Hamden and heard from three CEOs on how they got where they are, and how the young professionals can do the same.

American Eagle FCU President/CEO William J. Dokas advised the group that if you keep your head down and work hard, people will notice.” 

Seasons FCU President/CEO Keith Wiemert told the audience to “follow what you have a passion for.”  He recounted how an NCUA examiner was there on Wiemert's first day on the job, and that while it was trying at first to address the findings from the NCUA but he was able to work through those items and loves what he does and enjoys coming to work every day. 

Joanne Todd, president/CEO of Northeast Family FCU, started in the credit union industry in high school before moving up the ranks.  She said at a small credit union, “you did everything” from servicing members to clearing out the bats from the office.”  Todd said she was grateful that she had a lot of good mentors and added, “Nobody's lucky without working for it.”

The CT League's young professionals group is composed of people age 40. Wiemert said those in attendance are going to redefine credit unions for the next generation. “It's your opportunity,” he said.
