More than $26,000 has been raised by California and Nevada credit union and their league to contribute toward an orphanage project in rural western Kenya, the World Council of Credit Unions said.

Credit unions and individuals contributed more than $16,000 and the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues kicked in another $10,000 match in response to call for help issued last year by the World Council, which had adopted the Busia Compassionate Centre as a project.

In the past few months, crews already have dug a septic tank, installed a clean water system and built several new buildings – including a community room, dormitories and bathrooms – at the center, which also started its own credit union to offer the community its first-ever formal financial services, the World Council said.
