Retiring CUES President/CEO Fred Johnson has been named an honorary lifetime member of the Filene Research Institute in Madison, Wis., the organizations said Wednesday.

Johnson retires from Madison-based CUES on Dec. 31 after 23 years and will be succeeded by PSCU executive Chuck Fagan. CUES also has named its headquarters after Johnson.

“Fred was one of the earliest and most ardent supporters of the vision of the Filene Research Institute,” said Filene CEO Mark Meyer. “We want to acknowledge his ideas, his contributions, his leadership, and, above all, his friendship. We will miss him, but his legacy is strong.”

Other honorary lifetime members of the Filene Research Institute are Richard “Doc” Heins, former CUNA Mutual president/CEO, and Dave Chatfield, the institute's former executive director, the institute said.

“The Filene Research Institute plays a vital role in the success of the credit union movement; I'm pleased to be named an honorary lifetime member, and I'm flattered to be included on the list with Doc and Dave,” Johnson said.
