The $382 million, 27,500-member BMI Federal Credit Union in the Columbus suburb of Dublin, Ohio, is expanding its membership eligibility to everyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The eight-county area has about 1.8 million people and is the nation's 32nd largest MSA, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The 76-year-old credit union was created to serve employees at Battelle Memorial Institute and now has more than 350 SEGs, including Bob Evans, White Castle, Schottensteins/DSW and Worthington Industries, BMI FCU said.
"This change will allow BMI FCU to play an even greater role in growth and vitality of central Ohio," BMI FCU said in its announcement. The NCUA Board approved the expansion in October.
"This new membership policy will allow BMI FCU to partner with local organizations and businesses without signing a formal agreement," the announcement said, adding that it will no longer accept new members from outside the Columbus MSA.
