Members 1st Credit Union wants to help local businesses, so it's turned to the Mob.

That would be the Members 1st Cash Mob, in which social media are used to attract consumers to mom-and-pop businesses by rallying Facebook friends and others to show up there en masse.

The $101 million, 17,000-member Members 1st CU will determine who gets the love through nominations accepted each month on Facebook. The four most-frequently nominated businesses will then be put to a vote and the winner gets a scheduled time to be mobbed.

Members are encouraged to join the Cash Mob online mailing list to find out where to be and when.

The credit union planned to kick off the effort on Wednesday with a visit to the Fallis Around Town food truck on Hilltop Drive in Redding. Visitors will receive $5 off their meal when they use a Members 1st card as a non-PIN transaction.

"Our cash mob is unique by being sponsored by our credit union and covering a portion of your purchase," said Josh Markle, Members 1st marketing director. "This is a great opportunity for us to aid local business in Shasta and Tehama counties."
