The $5 billion Bethpage Federal Credit Union in Bethpage, N.Y. has raised more than $104,000 to aid Hurricane Sandy victims.

In addition to donating $25,000 to the American Red Cross after the natural disaster devastated the New York tri-state area, Bethpage FCU established a disaster relief fund in November. Money was donated by credit union members, and donations from local businesses were matched by the credit union.

“With the help of several generous Long Island businesses and Bethpage members, we were able to help make a substantial donation to the United Way of Long Island to help our friends and families get back on their feet,” said Kirk Kordelski, president/CEO of Bethpage FCU.

For example, Runner's Edge, the Farmingdale, N.Y.-based specialty running store, raised $28,560. Beyond donating a portion of sales, Runner's Edge organized various fundraising efforts including the “Help the Victims Fun Run” planned with the Greater Long Island Running Club, which drew 300 runners and helped raise approximately $9,000.

“Long Island is our home, and home to many of our customers. We are happy to do whatever we can to support our neighbors during this difficult time,” said Bob Cook, owner of Runner's Edge. “We are thrilled to have contributed the money to Bethpage's Disaster Relief Fund, where Bethpage matched our donation.”

What's more, a Raleigh, N.C. marathon, organized by Jim Micheels, owner of retail store Running Outfitters, raised $10,000 for the disaster fund. Many also contributed money reserved for bus transportation to the New York City Marathon, which was cancelled following the storm.
