The AACUL awarded its highest honor – the Eagle Award – to Brett Thompson, president/CEO of the Wisconsin Credit Union League and former AACUL chair, during the organization's annual meeting last week in Washington, D.C.

The Eagle award has been presented only 18 times in its 32-year history, the AACUL said. It is awarded to a league president who has an outstanding record of achievement at the league level, speaks out and takes a stand on critical, controversial issues, demonstrates leadership beyond the league level, implements new ideas and maintains an unremitting dedication to credit union and personal principles, the association said.

Mike Mercer, president/CEO of the Georgia Credit Union Affiliates and chair of the CUNA Board, serves as chair of the Eagle Committee and presented the award to Thompson. Mercer cited Thompson's outstanding advocacy work in the Wisconsin state capitol in Madison and in the U.S. Congress.

“Under Brett's leadership, the Wisconsin League has had far-reaching efforts to engage youth in credit unions,” said Bill Mellin, chair of AACUL and president/ CEO of the Credit Union Association of New York.

“Wisconsin credit unions now supervise 100 in-school, student-run branches with $3 million on deposit. The in-school branch program also has provided resources to help 405 teachers at 350 high schools achieve state teaching standards for personal finance and created innovative personal finance game Money Mission, which is being used by young people in 48 states to learn basic money management,” Mellin said.

Thompson's leadership work also includes leadership positions with AACUL, CUNA, and the Minnesota & Wisconsin Cooperatives.

“Brett has shaped many of AACUL's initiatives over the past 10-plus years. I can't think of anyone more deserving of this recognition,” noted Susan E. Newton, AACUL executive director.

During the AACUL's annual meeting, Mellin was re-elected to another term as AACUL chair. Other members of the Executive Board elected include:

· Wendell Lyons, first vice chairman, CEO, Kentucky Credit Union League
· Tracy Kenyon, second vice chairman, CEO, Montana Credit Union Network
· John Radebaugh, treasurer, CEO, North Carolina Credit Union League
· Mark Cummins, secretary, CEO, Minnesota Credit Union Network
· Brett Thompson, immediate past chair, Wisconsin Credit Union League
· Susan Newton, executive director, AACUL
