The National Credit Union Foundation said Thursday that it now has surpassed $130,000 in donations to CUAid in the call for help in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

“This is pretty incredible considering just yesterday we surpassed $100,000 with a call for more donations. Credit unions continue to step up to assist their colleagues along the East Coast,” said Christopher Morris, spokesman for the NCUF in Madison, Wis.

Meanwhile, T-shirt specialist CU*SWAG in Pasadena, Texas, said it is designating Friday as its quarterly day of donation, with all profits from orders placed on Nov. 9 to go to the NCUF for hurricane relief.

“People helping people is a core credit union belief,” said CU*SWAG's James Robert Lay. “Being on the Gulf Coast, we understand firsthand the disaster of a hurricane and want to offer our support for relief efforts along the East Coast while allowing credit unions to live the people helping people philosophy.”

Also Thursday, the $5.5 billion, 595,000-member America First Credit Union in Riverdale, Utah, said it has donated $3,500 to the American Red Cross relief efforts.

“When disasters of this magnitude occur, whether in our service area or not, we want to help with what we can financially and through our volunteer service programs,” said John Lund, America First president/CEO. “We thank our members for the opportunity to provide this donation and also encourage them, our business friends, and the public to donate to the relief efforts of Hurricane Sandy.”
