In an email message to members Tuesday night, Shawn Gilfedder, president/CEO of the $293 million McGraw-Hill Federal Credit Union said its headquarters in East Windsor, N.J. will open Wednesday on auxiliary power, while two branches in New York City may reopen and another will remain closed in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

“Our 55 Water Street branch (New York City) appears to have suffered the worst of the storm, forcing complete evacuation of the building,” Gilfedder wrote in the email. “Therefore, we're unable to open the branch and will communicate further updates as they become available.”

The credit union intends to open branches at the 2 Penn Plaza and 1221 Avenue of the Americas on Wednesday.

“However, given the unpredictable nature of mass transit, we may be unable to do so,” wrote Gilfedder.

McGraw-Hill FCU's primary and back-up phone lines are currently unavailable as Verizon, Comcast, and many of the major carriers are trying to restore communications throughout the region. The credit union's email system is operating. However, detailed account access via online, mobile, and telephone services remains unavailable at this time, according to Gilfedder.

“I want to assure you, over the past two days, we have processed and will continue to process payroll, check deposits, ACH transactions, and confirmed bill payments despite the effects of Hurricane Sandy,” Gilfedder wrote.

Our priorities during this unprecedented time are to ensure the safety and well-being of our employees, as well as the safety and soundness of your funds. We apologize for any inconvenience this storm has brought you and your family as we assess the damages Hurricane Sandy has caused McGraw-Hill FCU,” he wrote.
