Chartway Federal Credit Union in Virginia Beach, Va., said Tuesday that it was mourning the loss of longtime board member John "Jack" McGrath.

McGrath was a volunteer for 22 years and a board member for the past 18 years, having served as chair, first and second vice chair and secretary. He also chaired several committees and served on the credit union's CUSO board and with the We Promise Foundation, the $1.9 billion credit union's charitable arm that focused on making dreams come true for gravely ill children.

The Virginia Credit Union League had recognized McGrath's many contributions by presenting him its Roy F. Bergengren Award, Chartway added in its announcement.

McGrath served in the Navy for 21 years and as a civilian for another 41 years at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk.

He died Saturday at the age of 84 and is survived by his wife, Patsy, two children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

"Jack will long be remembered for his significant contributions," said Ron Burniske, Chartway president/CEO. "He was generous, he was kind, and he was determined to leave the world a better place than he found it. For more than two decades, he worked tirelessly to help our members chart their financial futures and to improve the communities we serve. Jack was an inspiration to us all and will be dearly missed."
