Leagues in New York, Rhode Island and North Carolina were among the organizations warning credit unions to batten down for the coming storm.
Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall by early Tuesday somewhere along the Mid-Atlantic coast and combine with winter-like weather coming from the west to rain and wind that could cause heavy damage and knock power to millions.

“We'll be in contact with credit unions during the storm and in the aftermath to assess the impact,” said Bonnie Sklar, public relations coordinator for the Credit Union Association of New York in Albany. “And we encourage credit unions to reach out to us if they have been impacted the storm.”
Sklar said the CUANY will be ready to coordinate assistance and organize resources as needed. In previous natural disasters, the association has helped credit unions get generators to provide power for credit union branches and raised funds to help credit unions with immediate clean up expenses.
New England is another destination for Sandy. “Obviously, we are aware of the potential disruptions the extreme weather than cause. It's sort of a fact of life here in the Northeast,” said Rob Kimmett, senior vice president of marketing for the Credit Union Association of Rhode Island. “We know that credit unions have their disaster recovery plans in place. We'll be on site here at the association and be ready to help out if anything does happen.”
In North Carolina, they are bracing for the storm and hope the damage is minimal.
“While we expect a good deal of rain in the eastern part of the state, our hope is that the storm will stay far enough out to sea to limit the amount of wind damage in North Carolina,” said Jeff Hardin, spokesman for the North Carolina Credit Union League in Raleigh. “But at this point, we will have to hope for the best and wait to see how the storm tracks the next few days.”
