Leagues in New York, Rhode Island and North Carolina were among the organizations warning credit unions to batten down for the coming storm.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall by early Tuesday somewhere along the Mid-Atlantic coast and combine with winter-like weather coming from the west to rain and wind that could cause heavy damage and knock power to millions.

"We'll be in contact with credit unions during the storm and in the aftermath to assess the impact," said Bonnie Sklar, public relations coordinator for the Credit Union Association of New York in Albany. "And we encourage credit unions to reach out to us if they have been impacted the storm."

Sklar said the CUANY will be ready to coordinate assistance and organize resources as needed. In previous natural disasters, the association has helped credit unions get generators to provide power for credit union branches and raised funds to help credit unions with immediate clean up expenses.
