In light of heated debate on its future and possible changes, Desert Schools Financial Services will host a series of seminars on Medicare over the next few months.

The free sessions will run from Sept. 27 through Dec. 1 at various locations, according to the $3 billion Desert Schools Federal Credit Union.

Desert Schools Financial Services, a limited liability company, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Phoenix credit union.

Representatives from the subsidiary will be available to answer questions related to Medicare benefits, including recent changes to benefits, options that are available during enrollment, and how the Social Security Administration determines benefits, the credit union said.

Both current Desert Schools' members and the general public are welcome to attend the seminars.

“Our goal is to provide unbiased support on a complicated subject at these seminars,” said Bryan Herdt, long term care and Medicare supplemental insurance specialist for Desert Schools Financial Services. “More people have elected to continue working past 65, and have access to a variety of options including retiree benefits, VA benefits or even eligibility for Medicaid.”

Herdt said “attendees in the past have found the sessions non-threatening and very helpful, so we're happy to continue giving members of our community the education to better understand the changing landscape of Medicare.”

Medicare continues to be a hot button issue within the election campaigns of President Barack Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney.
