As momentum picks up to support local businesses, Fort Community Credit Union is the latest to join the effort.

The $183 million cooperative in Fort Atkinson, Wis., has partnered with fisoc Inc. to offer the Buzz Points program, which will bring Fort Community and merchants together through a debit card rewards platform that encourages consumers to shop local.

Members with an account at the credit union can earn double, triple or more reward points when they shop at local businesses, according to Fort Community.

The credit union said it is launching the Buzz Points program at its locations in the Fort Atkinson, Jefferson and Whitewater, Wis., communities. Although Fort Community is sponsoring this program, the credit union said businesses do not have to be FCCU commercial account holders to participate.

Based in Austin, Texas, fisoc has an alliance with CUNA Strategic Services to pilot the BuzzBanking program for credit unions.

Over the past few weeks, credit unions in Michigan and Ohio have either participated or are gearing up to join in on cash mobs, which are campaigns to support local businesses by buying their products and services.
