Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.), who made controversial statements regarding rape and pregnancy Sunday, said Tuesday he's not withdrawing from the Show-Me State's senate race against incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill.

However, should Akin change his mind or eventually lose the election to McCaskill, credit unions would lose a supporter on Capitol Hill.

Akin, who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2001, signed on as a co-sponsor of CURIA in April 2008. He also has been a supporter of credit union tax-exempt status, at one time telling the House Ways and Means Chairman that “a tax on credit unions would be a tax on consumers.”

According to the Center for Responsive Politics' PAC tracking website OpenSecrets.org, the now-controversial Missourian was the state's top CUNA PAC recipient during the 2012 election cycle, pocketing $5,000. In comparison, McCaskill received $3,750 from CULAC during the same period.

Since he was elected, CULAC has contributed $28,845 to Akin, with the PAC's largest contribution – $8,000 – coming during the 2008 election cycle, the same year he signed on to sponsor CURIA.

“Rep. Akin has been a strong supporter of credit unions and our issues, and our past contributions have been based on his strong record of support. That is CULAC's basic standard,” said CUNA senior vice president of communications Mark Wolff. “Like everyone else, we are watching his current political situation closely to see how it unfolds before making any future decisions.”

NAFCU's PAC has not contributed to Akin, according to OpenSecrets.
