Rep. Steve LaTourette's (R-Ohio) announcement that he won't seek a 1oth Congressional term means the credit union industry will lose both authors of 1998's Credit Union Membership Access Act from Congress. Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D-Pa.), H.R. 1151 co-author, lost his seat in 2011 to Rep. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.).
LaTourette said during a Tuesday press conference that a lack of compromise in Congress contributed to his decision to retire at the end of his term in January. He denied the decision is the result of his inability to take the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's chairman seat, or a rumored feud with House Speaker and fellow Ohio congressman John Boehner (R-Ohio).
Republican party officials in Ohio will select a Republican to replace him on the November ballot.
