The Massachusetts Credit Union League is endorsing Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren, the creator of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, in her bid challenging Republican Scott Brown for the state's U.S. Senate seat.

League officials said a formal press announcement would be issued later Thursday. Warren's campaign office sent a media announcement about the endorsement late Wednesday.

Warren's Boston office said the consumer advocate and Harvard professor would meet the media during a visit to the Worcester Credit Union's downtown branch.

“Elizabeth will discuss her strong support for credit unions and the benefits they provide to working families across the Commonwealth,” said a Warren press release. The latest Massachusetts polls show the Warren-Brown race in a dead heat.

Separately, the White House and Warren, in marking a year since the CFPB creation, touted benefits of the agency including monitoring of credit bureaus and streamlining procedures for college students to receive financial aid.
