Thanks to technology, CEOs of North Carolina credit unions convening this weekend in Pinehurst for the annual conference of the North Carolina Credit Union League will get to see a handlebar-filmed rendition of last week's "Odyssey Little Guy Bike Ride" across the state benefitting a hospital charity.
League officials said a "helmet cam" mounted atop the bike of Eric Gelly, league executive vice president, will recount the 366-mile cycling journey taken by four riders: Gelly, John Radebaugh, president/CEO of the league; David Brehmer, president/CEO of First Carolina Corporate, and Jeff Jones, president/CEO of the $53 million Freedom Federal Credit Union in Rocky Mount, N.C.
The effort, part of a trip up the Eastern Seaboard sponsored by the Vermont Cabot Creamery co-operative, raised more than $20,000 in donations for a children's hospital project in conjunction with the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C, in September.
The six-day cycling jaunt, which concluded last Sunday in Clarksville, Va., was deemed a big success in garnering donations and media interest but also had a few mishaps including "four dog chases, multiple flat tires, a vehicle in the ditch and a tropical storm," the league said Friday in a recap.
And now Pinehurst attendees on Monday will get to watch a videotape of the ride, said the league. As for that vehicle in the ditch, the league said that was the result of Tropical Storm Beryl pouring down on the riders.
"Beryl did cause a minor glitch when the support vehicle slid into the ditch. Fortunately no one was hurt and a kind passer-by pulled the vehicle out quickly," the league said.
Driving the support vehicle was John McGrail, CEO of the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation, who was no worse for the wear either, the league said.
