American 1 Credit Union, Jackson, Mich., awarded 15 high school graduates from southern Michigan with $1,000 scholarships for their commitment to altruism and community service. Scholarships are funded through American 1’s skip-a-pay program, which allows members to skip one month’s loan payment for a donation of $25.

The Credit Union Association of New York, Albany, N.Y., announced that 20 college-bound students will be receiving scholarships through the league’s 2012 annual scholarship program. This year the association will be awarding a total of $13,000, six $1,000 scholarships and 14 $500 awards. Scholarship applicants competed against other credit union members across the state. Judging was based on their academic performance, extracurricular and community activities, and an essay question. High school seniors who belong to a credit union and were planning to attend college for the first time were eligible for the scholarships. One hundred and two credit unions and association chapters participated in this year’s scholarship program, submitting a total of 1,886 applications.
