SELCO Community Credit Union, Eugene, Ore., has awarded scholarships to Oregon high school seniors for their combination of scholastic achievement and community involvement. Fourteen recipients were chosen from a pool of applicants to receive a $1,500 scholarship to be used toward their college education. To qualify, each scholarship recipient needed to be a SELCO member or an immediate family member of a SELCO member, attend a four-year accredited high school and have earned a 3.5 GPA. In addition, applicants were required to provide letters of recommendation and submit an essay describing their plans after college, choice of major/area of study, and the contributions they plan to make to society after graduation.

Silver State Schools Credit Union, Las Vegas, announced its 2012 college scholarship winners. Each of these scholarships, (four named for long-time volunteers Arlene Parkinson, Bart Roche, Leonard Petoske, and William Moore, and two SSSCU scholarships), awards $2,000 annually, renewable for up to four years, and is awarded to seniors who demonstrate excellence in academics, athletics and community service. The Arlene Parkinson Scholarship went to Alexandria Von Mohr, Northwest Career & Technical Academy, who will graduate with an advanced honors diploma with a weighted GPA of 4.65. Alexandria will attend UNLV Honors College where she intends to pursue a degree in hospitality with a minor in Human Resources. The Bart Roche Scholarship went to Green Valley High School’s Alyssa Caplan, who will graduate in the top 2% of her class of 654 with a weighted GPA of 4.775. Alyssa will attend Vassar College where she will study biology. The Leonard Petoske Scholarship was awarded to Logan Honea of Arbor View High School, who will graduate first in her class of 580 students with a weighted GPA of 4.8. Logan has applied and been accepted by the College of Wooster to study business economics. The William Moore Scholarship goes to Lacey Woods from Coronado High School, who will graduate with Honors, with a weighted GPA of 4.8. She is planning on attending the University of Utah, to pursue cello performance and psychology. Mikelle Torgesen, a senior at Boulder City High School, is the first of our two SSSCU scholarship award winners. Her academic schedule will ensure her a weighted GPA of 4.8 at graduation. Torgesen plans to attend Brigham Young University with elementary education as her intended field of study. The second SSSCU scholarship goes to Rachel Roorda of the Las Vegas Academy. She will graduate with an honors diploma with an overall weighted GPA of 4.8. Roorda has applied and been accepted to Houston Baptist College and intends to study business.

Spokane Teachers Credit Union, Spokane, Wash., selected the three scholarship recipients from among 23 eastern Washington high school seniors honored recently for excelling in career and technical education. This year’s scholarship recipients are Leah Amsden, Taylor Lewis and Mariah Nepean. Amsden, who holds a 3.9 grade-point average at Central Valley, where she participated in the school’s teaching academy and marketing sequences, plans to become an elementary teacher after attending Eastern Washington University. Lewis, who is senior class president, a National Honor Society member and holds numerous academic awards at Newport, is also has been captain of Newport’s soccer and basketball teams. She plans to become a physician. Nepean, who at North Central is a national DECA finalist, a National Honor Society member, and a recipient of the outstanding achievement in career and technical education award, plans to study business at Portland State University and eventually open her own business.
