American 1 Credit Union, Jackson, Mich., awarded 15 high school graduates from southern Michigan with $1,000 scholarships for their commitment to altruism and community service. The 2012 American 1 community involvement award winners were Sarah Davenport of Charlotte, Nathaniel Garrett of Battle Creek, Jennifer Snedecker of Jackson, Caleb Woods of Battle Creek, Riché Ridley of Battle Creek, Andrew Lavery of Jackson, Terren Davis of Jackson, Lindsey Chinavare of Horton, Rachel Lombardi of Battle Creek, Adam York of Jackson, Daniel Bertoni of Dexter, Donovan Dennis of Southfield, Lauren McDougal of Southfield, Simon Cone of Chelsea and Robert Everard of Chelsea. All of the students were involved in both extra-curricular activities and in their communities while in high school. Each wrote a 1,500-word essay on the benefits of altruism and how they improved their community through service. American 1 has rewarded high school seniors with $1,000 scholarships since 2000. Scholarships are funded through American 1’s skip-a-pay program, which allows members to skip one month’s loan payment for a donation of $25.

The Credit Union Association of New York, Albany, N.Y., announced that 20 college-bound students will be receiving scholarships through the league’s 2012 annual scholarship program. This year the association will be awarding a total of $13,000, six $1,000 scholarships and 14 $500 awards. Scholarship applicants competed against other credit union members across the state. Judging was based on their academic performance, extracurricular and community activities, and an essay question. High school seniors who belong to a credit union and were planning to attend college for the first time were eligible for the scholarships. One hundred and two credit unions and association chapters participated in this year’s scholarship program, submitting a total of 1,886 applications.

Gwinnett Federal Credit Union, Lawrenceville, Ga., announced the winners of its scholarship program, designed to honor the credit union’s founders as well as past and present board members and employees. This year, Gwinnett Federal awarded $92,500 in scholarships and educational grants. Fifteen $2,000 career advancement scholarships were awarded to members to assist in their continuing education in honor of the credit union’s founders. Legacy scholarships were awarded to nine high school seniors who will be attending college to pursue a degree in education and plan to return to Georgia to teach. These $2,500 scholarships were given in honor of past and present board members and employees who have served Gwinnett Federal for 20 years or more. Six $2,500 scholarships were awarded in honor of the lifetime achievements of noted school system leaders. Two $2,500 scholarships were awarded to Clarke County high school graduates on the basis of financial need, academic credentials and a demonstrated commitment to community service.

Robins Federal Credit Union, Warner Robins, Ga., recently presented five high school seniors from Middle Georgia with the Robins FCU “Most Excellent Senior Team” scholarship. The winners were Dalton Edge, Mary Persons High School; Carey Green, Peach County High School; Joy Kim, Veterans High School; Hannah Lowie, Wynfield Christian Academy; and Kaci Pedersen, Wheeler County High School. One hundred nineteen high school seniors applied for the scholarship. The winners were chosen based on their GPAs, SAT scores, extracurricular and community activities, written essays and financial needs. Each scholarship winner will receive a total of $4,000 ($1,000 per academic year.) Robins Federal Credit Union has awarded $230,000 to graduating seniors since the MEST scholarship was founded 16 years ago.

SELCO Community Credit Union, Eugene, Ore., has awarded scholarships to Oregon high school seniors for their combination of scholastic achievement and community involvement. Fourteen recipients were chosen from a pool of applicants to receive a $1,500 scholarship to be used toward their college education. To qualify, each scholarship recipient needed to be a SELCO member or an immediate family member of a SELCO member, attend a four-year accredited high school and have earned a 3.5 GPA. In addition, applicants were required to provide letters of recommendation and submit an essay describing their plans after college, choice of major/area of study, and the contributions they plan to make to society after graduation.

Silver State Schools Credit Union, Las Vegas, announced its 2012 college scholarship winners. Each of these scholarships, (four named for long-time volunteers Arlene Parkinson, Bart Roche, Leonard Petoske, and William Moore, and two SSSCU scholarships), awards $2,000 annually, renewable for up to four years, and is awarded to seniors who demonstrate excellence in academics, athletics and community service. The Arlene Parkinson Scholarship went to Alexandria Von Mohr, Northwest Career & Technical Academy, who will graduate with an advanced honors diploma with a weighted GPA of 4.65. Alexandria will attend UNLV Honors College where she intends to pursue a degree in hospitality with a minor in Human Resources. The Bart Roche Scholarship went to Green Valley High School’s Alyssa Caplan, who will graduate in the top 2% of her class of 654 with a weighted GPA of 4.775. Alyssa will attend Vassar College where she will study biology. The Leonard Petoske Scholarship was awarded to Logan Honea of Arbor View High School, who will graduate first in her class of 580 students with a weighted GPA of 4.8. Logan has applied and been accepted by the College of Wooster to study business economics. The William Moore Scholarship goes to Lacey Woods from Coronado High School, who will graduate with Honors, with a weighted GPA of 4.8. She is planning on attending the University of Utah, to pursue cello performance and psychology. Mikelle Torgesen, a senior at Boulder City High School, is the first of our two SSSCU scholarship award winners. Her academic schedule will ensure her a weighted GPA of 4.8 at graduation. Torgesen plans to attend Brigham Young University with elementary education as her intended field of study. The second SSSCU scholarship goes to Rachel Roorda of the Las Vegas Academy. She will graduate with an honors diploma with an overall weighted GPA of 4.8. Roorda has applied and been accepted to Houston Baptist College and intends to study business.

Spokane Teachers Credit Union, Spokane, Wash., selected the three scholarship recipients from among 23 eastern Washington high school seniors honored recently for excelling in career and technical education. This year’s scholarship recipients are Leah Amsden, Taylor Lewis and Mariah Nepean. Amsden, who holds a 3.9 grade-point average at Central Valley, where she participated in the school’s teaching academy and marketing sequences, plans to become an elementary teacher after attending Eastern Washington University. Lewis, who is senior class president, a National Honor Society member and holds numerous academic awards at Newport, is also has been captain of Newport’s soccer and basketball teams. She plans to become a physician. Nepean, who at North Central is a national DECA finalist, a National Honor Society member, and a recipient of the outstanding achievement in career and technical education award, plans to study business at Portland State University and eventually open her own business.
