The $400 million Members Choice Credit Union of Houston is making it a specialty of purchasing former bank branches and converting them into CU facilities with two more to open in May.

The Texas CU said Thursday that though its members remain strong users of online and mobile services, brick and mortar remains important in demonstrating stability and service to the public.

The two new west Houston branches, formerly abandoned Comerica Bank facilities which fell victim to a local merger, will be open on State Hiway 6 at Cy-Fair and on Eldridge Parkway north of Briar Forest.

A year ago Members Choice took over a former Sterling Bank branch in west Houston. . As a result of the branch buys, “we are able to have a presence in a community with a proven track record,” said Kelly Gaines, chief marketing officer.

Both locations feature a full-service lobby, safe deposit boxes, drive-through lanes, a drive-up ATM and are approximately 3,600 square feet.

Members Choice, with 37,000 members and SEG/community based, hopes to open a third branch perhaps in 2012 once its sponsor, ConocoPhillips Corp. opens a planned new facility in the area.
