The $345 million, 46,000-member BrightStar Credit Union in Sunrise, Fla., has been named “Credit Union of the Year” by the South Florida Business Journal.

BrightStar CU was recognized for its growth during difficult financial times, increasing its total loans by $68 million to $263 million by adding 11,500 new loans in the 24 months ending June 30, the credit union said.

BrightStar also was feted for growing its employee count by 5% to 130 during that same period.

Ralph Crockett is CEO of the 65-year-old credit union, founded to serve public school employees and students in Broward County.

Community support, including support for educational activities and grants and scholarships to students, also were mentioned, as was the credit union's financial literacy programs.
