Consumers may be bringing their deposits into credit unions but they’re less comfortable with uninsured shares during economic downturns like now. You can watch the graphic above as uninsured shares grew between June 2003 and June 2008 from $46.7 million or 9% of deposits to $76.4 million or 11% of deposits. Then when the bottom dropped out of the housing and financial markets credit union members were sure to move their funds to ensure safety in federally insured accounts. Uninsured shares dropped to $24.1 million or 3% of deposits as of June 2009, but are climbing back up and were at $31.5 million or 4% of deposits as of June 2011.
