Patricia Wagaman, vice president of advertising and public relations for Tower FCU, said Bank Transfer Day itself didn't provide a huge boost in membership but the lead up to it has.

Oct. 1, 2011 through Nov. 5, 2011 produced 822 new members for the $2.4 billion credit union headquartered in Laurel, Md., a 16% increase from the 710 that signed up during the same period last year.

Check account openings were up 13% year over year for the same period from 598 in 2010 to 675 in 2011.

The big boost for Tower FCU came in debit, which increased 57% in just over a month running up to Nov. 5, Bank Transfer Day. In 2010, there were 430 new debit cards between Oct. 1 and Nov. 5; 2011 brought in 674 new debit cards during that time frame.
