ARLINGTON, Va. —Navy Federal Credit Union used today to say thank you. At all of its branches that are open, it provided free cookies and/or cake to celebrate Member Appreciation Day.

The Vienna, Va.-based credit union, which has assets of $47 billion, didn't tie any of its advertising to Bank Transfer Day but has said its new accounts are up over last year.

Abigail Ibay, the assistant manager of the credit union's branch on North Randolph Street here, said in the last few weeks they have had more people coming in to open new accounts. The foot traffic today has been brisk, the way it usually it is on Saturdays, she said.

Ibay added that people who make the move don't always say why they are switching financial institutions but they “want to learn about becoming a member of us and they like what they hear.''
