Through its several branches, Virginia Credit Union said 95 new members joined Friday.

“Our Saturday morning traffic in our branches today is normal. However, we have seen very strong numbers of new members and accounts in the weeks and days leading up to today,” said Glenn Birch, director of public and media relations at the 210,000-member $2.2 billion CU in Richmond, Va.

Birch said Virginia CU has seen a nearly 60% increase in new members during October compared with October 2010. The number of savings and checking accounts grew even more – 99% and 79%, respectively, in October versus October of last year, he added.

There were 2,300 new members added last month, Birch said.
