On a typical day, CUNA's website to help people find a credit union gets about 3,000 hits. However, because of the media coverage and social media attention, Bank Transfer Day was no ordinary day. The site had 70,000 hits on Friday, the most ever.

CUNA Vice President Pat Keefe said the trade group has been aggressively promoting the site, www.asmarterchoice.org, when dealing with the media and the state leagues have also been working to raise awareness of it.

"We've been using every possible opportunity to direct consumers to credit unions. And whenever we deal with the media we mention it as part of the many resources that are available to find out about credit unions,'' Keefe said.
