The $5.3 billion San Diego County Credit Union wants to offer a way for locals tired of big bank fees to work out their frustrations.

On Saturday, Nov. 5, in support of Bank Transfer Day, new members who open a SDCCU checking account can just shred their old debit card from a big bank.

New and existing checking account members can also post a photograph of themselves shredding their big bank debit card on SDCCU's Facebook page now through Wednesday, Nov. 30 for a chance to win $1,000. Five other prizes of $100 Visa gift cards will also be awarded.

According to Teresa Halleck, president/CEO of the 219,000-member San Diego credit union, the contest is a way to remind consumers they have options and “that they don't need to be nickel and dimed.”
