The Waterbury branch of the $560 million Vermont State Employees Credit Union remains closed after the state building hosting it was flooded by Hurricane Irene more than a week ago.
"The State of Vermont has not given us any indication of when and if repairs will begin. I expect to be out of that branch for an extended period of time," said Terry Field, vice president of finance for the 49,000-member CU.
The credit union is based in Montpelier and has six branches. Vermont was among the states particularly hard hit by the disastrous flooding rains the tropical system dropped along the East Coast the weekend of Aug. 27-28.
Employees were allowed into the damaged branch to recover personal possessions and member information. ATMs and other equipment and furnishings were destroyed by the flooding.
Field said preparation that got under way as the credit union deployed its disaster plan upon the hurricane's approach did help lessen the impact of the storm on Vermont State Employees CU.
