The generosity of Redstone Federal Credit Union toward financial relief to victims of the April 27 tornadoes that ravaged north Alabama is nearing $100,000, the CU said last week.
The totals include funds directed to the League of Southeastern Credit Unions Foundation as well as recent contributions of $56,487 to the American Red Cross and $15,889 to the Salvation Army. Funds were solicited from members through online donations or branch visits with Redstone making corporate contributions to the agencies as well.
"You can say we've tried to step up to the plate in a major way to help those who suffered so much because of the tragedy," said Joyce Dye, senior vice president-communications of the $3 billion Huntsville CU.
The president/CEO of Redstone, Joseph H. Newberry, said although the CU has always responded to natural disasters, "the April 27 tornadoes really hit home with its members."
"Whenever there has been a need, we have seen our members and the community as a whole generously reach into their pockets."
