As part of National Tire Safety Week, Navy Federal Credit Union will be one of several pit stops for free tire inspections.

From June 5 to June 12, technicians with TireVan Corp., a mobile tire replacement service, will provide free tire wear inspection, pressure checks and inflation, and educate drivers on the importance of properly maintained tires, according to the company.

The $44 billion Navy Federal, Northrop Grumman Information Systems, George Mason University, Orbital Sciences and MITRE Corp. are among the participants that will host the pit stops in the Washington metropolitan area.

According to a Rubber Manufacturers Association survey, 64% of drivers do not know how to determine if their tires are worn and need to be replaced.

Fifty-five percent of U.S. vehicles have at least one under-inflated tire, which contribute to more than 600 fatalities and 33,000 injuries annually, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.
