A pair of swooping swans sent staffers scurrying and put the disaster recovery support system to the test recently at a Michigan credit union data center.

The big birds crashed into a power line on May 24 at the data center that supports core processing customers of CU*Answers in Grand Rapids, the CUSO said.

The brief power interruption knocked out the cooling capacity of the air handlers but backup generators kicked in, staffers did their jobs and life quickly returned to normal, CU*Answers said.

“Neither a single credit union client nor a credit union member was aware of the incident,” the CUSO said in a statement. “The swans were seen later that day swimming on a neighboring pond, also appearing to have recovered nicely.”

CU*Answers said it provides core processing, online and mobile banking and other self-service products to approximately 200 credit unions.
