The credit unions in Puerto Rico have opted to use Cardtronics, the biggest independent ATM deployer in the country, to manage their ATM programs, the company said.

The three credit unions, Cooperativa San Rafael, GerenCoop and PuebloCoop, have chosen Cardtronics to provide a full service option which could provide everything from ATM placement, transaction processing, cash management, customer service, maintenance and more, the company added.

"Looking outside our own organization for the hardware, transaction processing and ancillary services necessary to operate an ATM network marks a point of departure for both Cooperativa San Rafael and the Puerto Rican financial services market at large," said Rafael Mercado, president, Cooperativa San Rafael. "Launching a new ATM network strategy with the assistance of Cardtronics delivers the immediate benefits of reduced operating costs, passing ATM regulatory concerns to Cardtronics and gaining the flexibility to time-efficiently and cost-effectively grow our ATM network as needed."

"By thinking 'outside the box' of how a financial institution operates an ATM network in Puerto Rico, Cooperativa San Rafael, GerenCoop and PuebloCoop have all positioned themselves to reduce the costs associated with maintaining an ATM presence," said Mike Clinard, an executive with Global Services for Cardtronics. "Beyond near-term cost savings, aligning with Cardtronics gives all three credit unions new-found flexibility to expand their ATM fleet without a capital investment, possibly reduce expenditures around vault cash services, to increase their brand's visibility and widen the availability of surcharge-free cash access to their members."
