Sheilah Montgomery has been named the new president/CEO of the Credit Union of Atlanta.

A 35-year financial services veteran, Montgomery previously served as president/CEO of 1st Choice Credit Union in Atlanta.

“We have great confidence in Sheilah's leadership abilities,” said Calvin Tucker, board chairman of the $60 million CU of Atlanta. “Her wealth of knowledge/experience, passion for the credit union movement and desire for success are invaluable assets that will serve our members well and ensure a solid future for many years to come.”

Montgomery succeeds DeFarra Dean Gaymon, who had served at the helm of CU of Atlanta from 2006 until his death in July 2010. Gaymon was shot and killed by a New Jersey undercover sheriff detective. A grand jury is scheduled to hear the case by May.

Described as an advocate for the underserved, Montgomery is the co-founder of the African-American Credit Union Coalition. She is also a member of the Federation of Community Development Credit Unions and has served on the board of the Georgia Credit Union Executive Association, Greater Atlanta Credit Union Chapter.

“It's a great honor to join CUA's leadership team,” said Montgomery in a statement. “I look forward to continuing CUA's longstanding commitment to service and establishing CUA as a financial resource in the communities we serve.”

CU of Atlanta serves more than 15,000 members.
