Robert Stauffer, the outside legal counsel for the $35 million Apex Community FCU of Pottstown, Pa., is one relieved lawyer today, after a homeless man found and turned in his lost envelope containing $1,440 in cash.
It took nearly a week before the good Samaritan, John Cavanaugh, was finally identified by local officials after he turned the money over to the West Chester, Pa. police.
Stauffer said the envelope apparently fell through a coat pocket onto the street. He had planned to write a check and had been on his way to deposit the funds collected from mortgage accounts destined for the Chester County Recorder of Deeds office when he noticed the missing envelope.
Remembering the Apex CU logo on the envelope, he called the CU and the police, who eventually called him back to tell them Cavanaugh had flagged down a police officer to turn over the money.
To repay the kindness, Stauffer, a partner at Wells Hoffman Holloway & Stauffer, joined by the CU, plan to "help out this honest individual with a special reward" and with donations being made to a food pantry that the homeless man frequented.
The local media picked up the story "and now we expect to hold a briefing tomorrow where I will get to meet John Cavanaugh and thank him."
"To find out it was somebody down on his luck who returned every penny, I'm very appreciative," Stauffer said after claiming his money at the West Chester police station. "I want to thank him. He may be down on his luck, but things will change because when you do good things for people, these things have a way of coming around. Good deeds are always rewarded."
