With a $5,000 donation to the Elder Financial Protection Network, Pacific Service Credit Union recently marked its 10th consecutive year of bringing awareness to preventing the financial abuse of elders and dependent adults.
An underreported crime, an estimated 80% of financial abuse cases of elderly citizens goes unprosecuted, said Noelle Fischer-Herbert, vice president of corporate development at Pacific Service CU in Walnut Creek, Calif.
"As a financial institution, we believe it is our responsibility to partner with organizations like EFPN to protect the financial assets of those most vulnerable in our community," Fischer-Herbert said.
In November 2009, the credit union received a Congressional Certificate of Special Recognition from Calif. Rep. George Miller, (D-Martinez) for the many years it has worked to raise awareness and to prevent financial abuse of elderly and dependent adults in the communities it serves.
"The credit union has been involved in our efforts since 2002. Working together, we have been able to provide a variety of awareness and training programs for the benefit of seniors and elder justice advocates throughout Northern California," said Jenefer Duane, EFPN founder and CEO.
EFPN said it hosts an annual call to action conference featuring representatives from California financial institutions, law enforcement and social service agencies.
