Former CUNA President/CEO Dan Mica is going solo.

Mica has launched a consulting firm that will provide advice on government relations, credit union operations and related topics, but he's not planning on being a registered lobbyist.

Mica said he would be doing some work for CUNA and some credit unions, which he declined to identify.

In an interview with Credit Union Times, Mica declined to say what issues he'd be working on for CUNA. But when asked if he would be helping on the interchange issue, he said, “That is a very important issue.”

Mica said he has already turned down clients that would conflict with his past work for CUNA because he is “very committed to the credit union movement.”

His firm will offer a range of services.

“I will offer advice on government relations and strategic planning, including helping credit unions that might want to merge,” he said.

While he has been a registered lobbyist, he said he doesn't anticipate that he'd spend more than 20% of his time lobbying, the required threshold for registration.

His firm, Daniel A. Mica LLC, will be based in the Washington area, but he said it would be “virtual, so it will be operated wherever I happen to be.”

Mica said the number of employees is still to be determined, but he plans to hire outside experts depending on the kind of project he is working on for a particular client.

He also said he's been in negotiations to join some corporate and nonprofit boards and would also do some public speaking.

Mica left CUNA last June, after having been its leader for 14 years. Before that he was a top executive of a life insurance trade association and a Democratic congressman from Florida for 10 years.
