People receiving government benefits by paper check have until March 1, 2013 to switch to direct deposits, according to final rules adopted by the Treasury Department.

Anyone applying for benefits on or after May 1 will automatically receive them electronically.

Recipients can have the deposit go directly into a credit union or bank account or a Direct Express MasterCard account.
