Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union, Aberdeen, Md., hosted its annual "Shred-It Day" recently. Members were encouraged to bring paper documents to one of several branch parking lots for shredding. The event spreads the message that shredding private papers with sensitive information is a fast and easy way to deter identity theft.
Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Bethpage, N.Y., partnered with the Greater Long Island Running Club to stage the 25th annual Bethpage Federal Credit Union Ocean to Sound Relay. Celebrating a milestone 25 years on Long Island, the race attracted 1,000 runners, who navigated their way through a 50-mile scenic course stretching from the south shore to the north shore of Long Island. The charitable beneficiary of the relay is the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Long Island, which is dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services.
Consumers Credit Union, Kalamazoo, Mich., celebrated International Credit Union Day last month with a week-long celebration at all 13 of its branches. Events included a pumpkin giveaway, a children's coloring contest and free apple cider and doughnuts.
Credit Union of Georgia, Woodstock, Ga., sponsored the sixth annual Cobb Schools Foundation Homecoming Classic golf tournament recently. The tournament took place at Brookstone Country Club in Acworth. A number of volunteers attended the event for a fun day of golf, prizes and an opportunity to raise money for educational programs throughout Cobb County. The Cobb Schools Foundation is a nonprofit organization providing funds for education programs such as teacher grants, scholarships, SAT preparation, after-school programs and more.
Educational Community Credit Union, Kalamazoo, Mich., celebrated its 75th anniversary this year with cookies, $75 cash prize drawings and historical posters and newspapers documenting the company's Great Depression-era roots. The credit union was formed on Aug. 7, 1935, after nine educators met in a high school classroom and each invested $5.
Genisys Credit Union, Auburn Hills, Mich., participated in the Ypsilanti, Mich., heritage festival, contributing several volunteers and acting as entertainment stage sponsor. The festival is dedicated to the men and women who contributed to Ypsilanti's automotive history as employees of the General Motors Assembly and Hydra-Matic plants in Ypsilanti Township. It featured a parade, games, contests, shows and exhibits.
Maryland and District of Columbia Credit Union Association, Washington, congratulated D.C. City Council Chairman Vincent Gray on his victory, which has made him the next mayor of the District of Columbia. Gray won the support of the association by promising to commit to issues of importance to credit unions and their members, such as financial literacy education and allowing credit unions to become depositories for public funds.
Pacific Service Credit Union, Fresno, Calif., provided funding to Easter Seals Central California for the recent "Walk With Me" event at Woodward Park. Sponsorship funding donated by the credit union will be used provide therapy equipment for home consultants of the P.L.A.Y. Project (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters) to use when teaching and coaching parents of children with disabilities. The credit union has supported Easter Seals Central California since 2005.
State Employees' Credit Union, Raleigh, N.C., launched its "SECU Supports the Troops" campaign, a holiday collection drive to benefit North Carolina's National Guard and reservists deployed throughout the world. All 233 credit union branches will collect items to give to soldiers during their tours of duty and monetary donations to help defray shipping costs.
Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union, Ticonderoga, N.Y., hosted its first annual "Shred Fest" last month. The free paper-shredding event was held to increase public awareness of identity theft prevention, as part of its annual Credit Union Week celebration. Community members shredded personal documents at their nearest branch office during event hours. The campaign also included distribution of informational brochures on how to better guard against identify theft and an opportunity for members to sign up for electronic statements offered through the credit union's secure online banking system.
Yosemite Credit Union, Yosemite, Calif., a division of Valley First Credit Union, took part in the launch of a new Yosemite quarter coin. Credit union staff worked in conjunction with national park rangers in the planning and execution of the quarter sales. Armored trucks were on site throughout the event, which attracted more than a thousand people. The Yosemite quarter was the third coin released as part of the "America the Beautiful" quarters program.
