Political newcomer Rand Paul, a favorite of credit unions and the tea party movement, has won the U.S. Senate seat in Kentucky, according to Associated Press projections.
Paul, a Republican who received $10,000 from CUNA's PAC, defeated Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway.
Paul, the son of former GOP presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul, spoke of his strong desire to cut government spending and undo some of the policies of the Obama administration. He wasn't the favorite of the GOP establishment but won anyway.
He will succeed Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.), a member of the Banking Committee and a Hall of Fame pitcher, who did not seek re-election.
