Rep. Paul Kanjorski, who has been one of the strongest supporters of credit unions in Congress, was defeated after a 26-year career by Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta.

Kanjorski (D-Pa.), the No. 2 Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, was victim to a GOP wave that looked so strong that it was going to give the Republicans a majority in that chamber.

It is the third time that Barletta has attempted to unseat Kanjorski.

The PACs of CUNA and NAFCU each gave his campaign $10,000 and did extensive work on the ground on his behalf. CUNA's PAC also did partisan communications for him.

Former President Clinton and Vice President Biden both campaigned for Kanjorski He has sponsored many key pieces of credit union legislation, most recently a bill that would raise the cap on member business loans to 27.5% of assets.
