HAPO Community Credit Union, Richland, Wash., is working to connect soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan with their families in the U.S. Partnering with Operation Thank You, a nonprofit that donates packages overseas, the credit union donated 70 calling cards to the troops abroad-an estimated value of $1,500.

Credit Union of Georgia, Canton, Ga., supported the Cobb Schools Foundation in its efforts to provide educational reinforcement through rewards for excellence in teaching and learning in Cobb County schools. The credit union's donation, which exceeded $5,000, will help fund the foundation's programs in 2010 such as an Employee of the Year Luncheon and Project 2400, an initiative to boost student SAT scores.

Mountain America Credit Union, Salt Lake City, promised bucks for baskets. Partnering with the Utah Jazz, the credit union pledged to donate $50 to Huntsman Cancer Foundation for every three-pointer made by a Jazz player during the 2009-2010 season. The total sum of the donation was brought to $21,950 when Utah ended the season with 439 three-pointers.

The Golden 1 Credit Union, Sacramento, Calif., Information Technology and Loss Prevention Departments accumulated 502 pairs of socks for a donation to the local homeless. The Sock Drive was part of a larger 2008 initiative called Project 680-so named for the 680 reported homeless students that inhabit the area. Employees of The Golden 1 regularly participate in the outreach program that has provided more than 6,000 pairs of sox, 3,000 pairs of undergarments, and also elicited $4,000 for the purchase of shoes for the homeless since its inception.

SunCorp, Denver, Colo., board member Don Killeen traveled to Haiti with a team of dentists and dental students (including Killeen's own two sons) in order to provide emergency dental care to earthquake refugees in Kobonal. Executive Assistant Bonnie Ginther coordinated an effort that was supported by SunCorp employees to raise over $1,000 toward the mission through programs in which workers were encouraged to donate $1 each day in exchange for the opportunity to dress casually for work. The funding allowed Killeen and his team to provide treatment to more than 700 patients in one week-during which time Killeen's team extracted over 1,500 teeth.

CUNA Mutual Group, Madison, Wis., representatives drove in $67,000 at the sixth annual Carolinas Cup, and intra-union golf tournament. Members of North and South Carolina credit unions competed against one another to raise money that will benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp for chronically and terminally ill children. Victory Junction was created by Kyle and Pattie Petty, and is NASCAR-themed in memory of their son Adam, who was killed in a racing accident. The golf outing, won this year by the South Carolina Credit Union League, has contributed nearly $300,000 to the camp to date.

West Virginia Credit Union League, Weirton-Wellsburg, W.Va., contributed a donation to a local church food bank to help the help the establishment continue to operate during the current economic conditions.

Coventry Credit Union, Coventry, R.I., employees raised $1,690 to aid residents of Rhode Island affected by the March floods. According to Shelly Peckham-Berardinelli, vice president of marketing, the fundraising was inspired by a previously enacted telethon fundraiser that lent support to people displaced by the severe flooding. Employees participated in "Dress Casual Friday's," raising $845, which was then matched by the credit union.

Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union, Alpena, Mich., staff focused their efforts and revenue to facilitate research on Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a disability more commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease. Each year, the credit union selects four charities to support with fundraising. During the first quarter of 2010, employees raised $4,298.04 toward the search for a cure. The money, collected through a series of events including bake sales, a Valentine's Day carnation sale, and a bowling fundraiser, was donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, a private-sector organization dedicated to finding cures for diseases such as ALS.

TruMark Financial Credit Union, Trevose, Pa., employees participated in Autism awareness fundraising raising $791 for Autism Delaware, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational and social services to people with autism.
