According to several media reports, Defarra Gaymon, president/CEO of Credit Union of Atlanta, was shot and killed by an undercover detective in New Jersey over the weekend.

A Montclair, N.J. resident, Gaymon was in New Jersey for a social event, WSBTV.com reported. Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino said the unnamed detective was investigating complaints of sexual activity at Branch Brook Park in Newark, N.J. July 17. The condition of the detective was not known although several media outlets reported him being taken to a Newark hospital and treated. Credit Union Times was told the prosecutor's office will be providing an update shortly.

Gaymon was in the park at the time but Laurino said he did not know what took place before the shooting occurred. Gaymon's truck was parked near the scene of the shooting but was not in it at the time, WSBTV.com reported. Gaymon was taken to the same Newark hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m. July 17.

Calvin Tucker, board chairman of the $56 million Credit Union of Atlanta, told WSBTV.com "We are deeply saddened at the loss of Mr. Gaymon and offer our most sincere sympathy to the Gaymon family." Gaymon had served as president/CEO of the CU for nearly four years.

"He leaves a legacy which includes an unshakable commitment to the underserved, his staff and the credit union movement. Gaymon's platform of servant leadership will be deeply missed," Tucker said.
