Addison Avenue Federal Credit Union is the first U.S. user of a new application that allows its members to visually locate ATM machines with an iPhone.

Using what its developers call an augmented reality platform, the phone's camera is simply pointed to the horizon and can show visually where all ATM machines are in a several-mile radius and which ones are free and which ones charge fees, the credit union said.

Augmented reality is a technology that overlays digital content such as graphics or 3D models on real objects through any video output.

“Even with more than 300,000 ATMs across the country, finding one when you need it can be a challenge. The visual ATM locator solves this problem and shows people which ATMs are free vs. fee by looking at the horizon through a mobile device,” said Stu Fisher, senior vice president of e-commerce at $2.4 billion Addison Avenue.

“The visual ATM locator channel is the first of its kind in the U.S.,” said Lisa Murphy, product marketing manager for junaio, provider of the metaio application.

A version for the Android phone is coming soon, Addison Avenue said.
