In today's Oregon primary, credit unions are coordinating their support for one of the industry's leading "friends," state Sen. Rick Metsger running for State Treasurer on the Democratic ticket.

In a push led by the Credit Union Association of Oregon, eight CUs have posted messages of thanks on their website home pages praising Metsger "for his many years of supporting credit unions in the Oregon legislature" and wishing him luck in his treasurer race.

Metsger, a former Portland news and sports broadcaster, is in a tight race against the incumbent, Ted Wheeler, who was appointed to the job last March following the death of Ben Westlund, who CUAO said also was a long time credit union friend.

In addition to the website campaigning by the CUs, CUAO said it has supported the senator with funding through the state PAC and its Credit Union Legislative Action Fund.

CUAO named Senator Metsger its "Legislator of the Decade" at its 2009 Annual meeting and now the trade group said it seeks "to raise his profile."

CUs that have included a message on their websites are: Valley Health and Postal CU, Unitus Community CU, Northwest Community CU, OSU Federal, Oregon Community CU, OnPoint Community CU, Advantis CU NW Priority CU and US Agencies CU.
