Texans Credit Union, Dallas, raised more than $50,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at the organization’s Walk to Cure Diabetes. The event drew over 15,000 walkers in three locations and has raised $1.5 million to date. The credit union raised money by employees asking friends and family for donations, selling vendor logo space on their team T-shirts, selling jeans days and offering raffle prizes of Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Stars, Dallas Mavericks tickets and a week of vacation. 1st Advantage Federal Credit Union, Yorktown, Va., donated a refrigerator to the Salvation Army in Hampton, Va. When the credit union’s Community Outreach Team heard the local chapter of the Salvation Army was in need of additional refrigeration for donated items, it was eager to help. The donation also contributed to a broader effort by the Salvation Army to increase food access for the hungry.

Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, Groton, Conn., raised nearly $4,000 for the American Heart Association through its “Walk to Hawaii” challenge. The credit union’s community giving program challenged staff to walk the distance to Hawaii (5,782 miles) during their lunch breaks and free time. Donating 50 cents for every mile walked, the credit union’s program helped employees raise over $1,800 in addition to the funds raised by individuals and in-branch paper heart sales.
