North Jersey Federal Credit Union, Totowa, N.J., participated in two community events to support breast cancer awareness, the Lee National Denim Day and the Breast Cancer Walk. Credit union employees participated in the denim day event by sporting their favorite pair of jeans to work and donating to the breast cancer awareness fund. Employees also donated their time to participate in the Breast Cancer Walk held at Bergen Community College and distributed water bottles. Employees who could not participate made monetary contributions to the breast cancer fund.
Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Bethpage, N.Y., partnered with Cablevision, National Grid, Northrop Grumman and the New York Islanders hockey team in hosting a turkey and trimmings collection to benefit Island Harvest, the hunger relief organization that supplies Long Island's community-based nonprofit organizations with food. The food drive included daylong and after-school specials for family fun and a lineup of trucks, tents and boxes for storing the public's donations. New York Knicks basketball legend John Starks was on site to assist the volunteers and chat with the public.
Andrews Federal Credit Union, Suitland, Md., sponsored the third annual Gold Star Mothers Memorial March at the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. Civilians and service members from the Army, Marines, Air Force, and Civil Air Patrol participated in the event to honor Gold Star Mothers from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The American Gold Star Mothers organization supports mothers who have lost a son or daughter during military service. The credit union also held an employee drive to donate supplies to the Joint Base Andrews Fisher House. The Fisher House provides a place to stay for families of injured service members while their loved one is recovering from war injuries.
WesCorp Federal Credit Union, San Dimas, Calif., announced its participation in the sixth national tour of Operation Best Wishes. The award-winning program was first offered in 2004 as a way for credit unions to help military families reach out to their deployed loved ones during the holidays through video recordings sent via the Internet. Nearly 20 credit unions in 15 states will also participate as hosting sites for the tour.
Neighbors Credit Union, St. Louis, conducted a free, educational seminar regarding unexpected job transitions. Led by Beth Hurst, the investment representative at the credit union, the workshop focused on taking care of yourself, your family and your finances. The emotional and financial aspects of looking for a new job, getting back on track and rebuilding your finances were discussed as well.
USA One Credit Union, Matteson, Ill., joined with credit unions nationwide in "Answering The Call" by helping to raise awareness and showing its support of National Runaway Prevention Month. Via a program sponsored by Financial Service Centers Cooperative, the credit union along with other participating credit unions will work with the National Runaway Switchboard to help raise awareness of issues facing runaway and at-risk youth and educate Americans about solutions and the role they can play in preventing youth from running away.
St. Anne's Credit Union, Fall River, Mass., held a "Pay Stub Food Drive" to benefit the Citizens-for-Citizens Food Pantry in Fall River and the Good Shepherd Food Pantry in Acushnet. Each pay period, employees received a notice attached to their pay stubs specifying a nonperishable food item. The item was then collected for a two-week time period. The drive was held for four months and in total nearly 500 pounds of food were collected.
GFA Federal Credit Union Gardner, Mass., collected nonperishable food items in its branches to benefit families in need during the Thanksgiving season. The credit union's annual food drive has become a tradition that provides essential support to charitable groups in each branch's local community.
Cyprus Credit Union, Salt Lake City, participated in the annual MS 150. The credit union's cycling team had nearly 40 riders this year. With the help of generous members of the credit union Team Cyprus raised nearly $60,000 for the Utah chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In the four years the credit union has been participating in the ride, it has raised more than $200,000 for the chapter. The money raised at the MS 150 goes toward research and providing local programs to those living with multiple sclerosis.
