Design-build firm EHS Design's renovation of the iQ Credit Union headquarters in downtown Vancouver, Wash., has received the 2009 Community Pride Design Award.
The Clark County award program recognizes exceptional buildings, development and civic improvements that have had a positive impact on the community through commercial, industrial, residential development, public facilities and restoration efforts.
EHS Design provided strategic planning, interior design and architectural services for the renovation of the 1960s four-story, concrete-frame building, which anchors a district of unique early modern buildings. Formerly the City of Vancouver Citizens Service Center on Main Street, the credit union's new branch is on the ground floor with business lending and executive administration occupying the upper stories.
The project involved demolishing an adjacent single-story branch building, additional selective demolition of the multistory building, converting the existing parking level under the building into the new branch, providing seismic upgrades and constructing new building skin, glazing, and mechanical, electrical and fire protection systems. Interior design services included selection of finishes and furnishings throughout. The new lobby addition is marked by a curved red canopy, creating a dramatic two-story height entry. Site improvements involved a landscaped pedestrian plaza, full ADA access, walk-up and drive-up ATMs and parking.
