California Credit Union League, Santa Rosa, Calif., raised $2,400 through its Wine Country Chapter for Becoming Independent, a local nonprofit organization that promotes participation and community inclusion for persons with developmental disabilities and their families. The Wine Country Chapter, together with a number of credit union industry business partners, tested their trivia knowledge at a quiz night-themed fundraising event.
United Heritage Credit Union, Austin, Texas, contributed over $22,000 to the Children's Miracle Network and the Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas. The credit union, which joined forces with the Austin Chapter of Credit Unions, raffled off a 2009 Pontiac G5 and used games to create a branch challenge. In the baby doll-challenge. each branch was given a baby doll and had to sell raffle tickets in order to purchase all the items the babies needed from the "store" created on the credit union's internal employee Web site. The winner of the contest was the first branch that purchased all the items. All the dolls were donated to the child life staff at the medical center.
State Employees' Credit Union, Raleigh, N.C., helped North Carolina charitable organizations save thousands of dollars through the use of its no-cost coin sorter. Many charitable groups hold penny drives and various coin collection events throughout the year, which can result in large volumes of change needing to be counted by a nonprofit group. The SECU's FAT CAT machines have taken in approximately $317,000 in coins from charity groups, saving them nearly $25,000 in coin-sorter fees.

Education Plus Credit Union, Monroe, Mich., donated a foreclosed property in Carleton to Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County. Habitat for Humanity plans to build a new home on this property within the next two years.
Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union, Westbury, N.Y., joined forces with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York and other organizations to build a playhouse for nine-year-old Camille Floyd, a girl born with sickle cell anemia. The house was assembled in a single day, and the credit union donated $2,000 to the effort.
TruMark Financial Credit Union, Trevose, Pa., asked its employees to wear jeans to support the National Parkinson's Foundation. The $595 collected during the fundraiser went toward the effort to fight the disease.
Belvoir Federal Credit Union, Fort Belvoir, Va., donated $1,500 to the Fort Belvoir Chapter of the USO. The Armed Forces Financial Network matched the donation for a combined contribution of $3,000. The donation helped service members and their families connect and feel a sense of community.
San Francisco Federal Credit Union, San Francisco, showed its continued support of the Richmond District Neighborhood Center by donating $1,500 to the organization. The donation helped the neighborhood center work toward improving quality of life in the community by offering a number of programs and classes for local youth, families and immigrants.
Tower Federal Credit Union, Laurel, Md., donated new children's bike helmets at the National Night Out event to help promote bike safety. The credit union's representatives also gave away free water bottles and information about the benefits of credit union membership during the event. Over 200 people attended the festivities, which included a youth bike rodeo and obstacle course, safety and exercise demonstrations, live music, free ice cream sundaes and visits from local police officers and mascots.
HarborOne Credit Union, Brockton, Mass., presented a check for $23,635 to the Old Colony YMCA's Strong Kids campaign. The amount collected represented a combined effort from the credit union's employees and corporate donations.
Boomer Sooner Chapter of Credit Unions, Oklahoma City, raised more than $30,000 on behalf of Children's Miracle Network at its 12th annual Boomer Sooner Golf Classic. The proceeds went to the Children's Medical Research Institute's endowed chair programs at the Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. An added bonus of this year's tournament was that a portion of the funds raised will be matched by the CO-OP Network's matching funds program.
MSU Federal Credit Union, East Lansing, Mich., raised $24,175 for Ele's Place, a support group for children who have lost a parent, sibling or other close family member. Fundraising efforts included bake sales, luncheons, raffles and dining at local restaurants where each restaurant gave a percentage of sales in support of Ele's Place. The funds went toward early elementary school counseling sessions at the facility and a memory garden where children can place markers honoring their loved ones.
Liberty Bay Credit Union, Braintree, Mass., announced it has recycled more than 1,100 phones, chargers and accessories since becoming a drop-off location for the "Cell Phones for Soldiers" initiative. Donated phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays for each phone-enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad.
MidSouth Federal Credit Union, Macon, Ga., presented a check to Education First, a local nonprofit organization. The donation helped sponsor the new teacher luncheon held at Ballard Hudson Middle School. The luncheon welcomed more than 150 new teachers to Bibb County.
SAC Federal Credit Union, Bellevue, Neb., teamed up with the Armed Forces Financial Network and donated a combined $3,000 to the 55th Wing enlisted program at Offutt Air Force Base. The funds went toward helping enlisted Offutt military members and families that have a great need for assistance.
