Based on a Georgia Credit Union Affiliates poll in connection with International Credit Union Day, the recession continues to take its toll of consumer spending habits among Georgians with only 13% looking to spend more now than a year ago.

More than two-thirds of 1,000 queried said their spending habits have now changed forever, according to GCUA.

The in-house survey was taken last week to showcase CU awareness and to honor the 100th anniversary. It was all linked in with a series of media interviews across the state, which also showed that residents are getting smarter about saving money by using CUs.

Also part of the GCUA poll promotion on ICU Day was the posting of new videos on its Web site (gcua.org), YouTube and Facebook of interviews with eight seniors giving financial advice to young people. The message: "by compiling testimonials of Georgians young and old about spending and savings habits over the years, Georgia credit unions hope to provide consumers with insight and inspiration for their own financial futures," concluded Michael Mercer, president/CEO of GCUA.
